History
In October, 1861, 309 families were sent to settle the St. George area by Brigham Young from Salt Lake City. Due to the warm climate their purpose was to raise crops of cotton, grapes, and mulberry bushes for silk. This was to fill the need for these items created by the Civil War. Called "Dixie" for it's warm, southern location and the ability to have several harvests. Named after George Smith who encouraged some scurvy plagued pioneers to eat raw potatoes for it's vitamin C. The cure worked making George the "Potato Saint" hence the name St. George.County Court House
