Units 5th and 6th

  • 5th Regiment, North Carolina Senior Reserves
    Organized by the consolidation of Stowe's Infantry Battalion, Senior Reserves, with other units in early 1865.
    Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee, 26 April 1865.
    Does not appear in the Official Records.
    Also known as the 74th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry.
  • 6th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
    Organized at Camp Alamance, near Company Shops (Burlington), North Carolina, in May, 1861.
    Surrendered with 6 officers and 175 men of which 72 were armed.

Units 7th and 8th

  • 7th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry
    Organized during the summer of 1862 with six companies.
    The unit skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky until August, 1863.
    Merged into the 65th North Carolina Regiment-6th Cavalry.
  • 7th Battalion, North Carolina Junior Reserves
    Organized with three companies at Wilmington on 4 June 1864.Concolidated with the 4th and 8th Infantry Battalions, Junior Reserves, and designated as the 72nd Infantry Regiment (3rd Junior Reserves) at Wilmington on 3 January 1865.
  • 7th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry
    Organized in January, 1865, when three independent companies were attached to the 14th battalion, North Carolina Cavalry to bring that unit up to regimental size. It disbanded after the surrender April 1865.
  • 7th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
    Organized at Camp Mason, near Graham, North Carolina, in August, 1861.
    Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee On February 26, 1865 with 13 officers and 139 men.
    A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.
  • 8th Battalion, North Carolina Junior Reserves
    Organized with three companies at Morganton on 10 June 1864. Consolidated with the 4th and 7th Infantry Battalions, Junior Reserves, and designated as the 72nd Infantry Regiment (3rd Junior Reserves) at Wilmington on 3 January 1865.
  • 8th Regiment, North Carolina Senior Reserves
    Organized as the 3rd Battalion, North Carolina Senior Reserves, with three companies at Goldsboro on 31 May 1864. Increased to a regiment and designated as the 78th Infantry Regiment (8th Senior Reserves) in early 1865.

Units 9th through 12th

  • 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery
    Organized during the spring of 1862 at Wilmington, North Carolina, with three companies, later increased to four.
    Also known as 10th Artillery Battalion
    Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
  • 11th Battalion, North Carolina Home Guards (Whitford's Infantry Battalion (also called 11th Battalion, Whitford's Rangers, or Whitford's Partisans]
    Organized during the spring of 1862 with four companies, later increased to six.
    January, 1864, it merged into the 67th North Carolina Regiment.
  • 11th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (Bethel Regiment)
    Organized at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina, in March, 1862.
    It lost over half of the 617 at Gettysburg, reported 15 casualties at Bristoe.
    Surrendered 8 officers and 74 men.
  • 12th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry
    Organized in May, 1863, with three companies.
    July 11, 1864, Companies A and B merged into the 59th North Carolina Regiment-4th Cavalry.
    Company C transferred to the 16th North Carolina Cavalry Battalion.

Units 13th through 15th

  • Branch Light Artillery
    Organized early in 1862 with men from Craven, Beaufort, and Wake counties.
    This company was assigned to the 13th North Carolina Artillery Battalion on December 1, 1863, but never served with that command.
    Surrendered on April 9, 1865.
  • 13th Battalion, North Carolina Infantry
    Organized 19 May 1863, when four independent companies of bridge guards were organized into a battalion.
    Consolidated with the 8th Battalion North Carolina Partisan Rangers to form the 66th Regiment North Carolina Troop on 2 October 1863.
  • 13th Battalion, North Carolina Light Artillery
    Organized in December, 1863, with six companies.
    Companies A, B, C, D, and E were assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia, fought at Bentonville.
    Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
    Company F (Branch Artillery) served with the Army of Northern Virginia and surrendered at Appomattox.
  • 14th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry formerly Woodfin's Battalion
    Organized at Asheville, North Carolina, during the summer of 1862 with three companies, later increased to six.
    In the spring of 1865 four additional companies from Buncombe, Henderson, and Transylvania counties joined the command.
    It now was also called the 79th Regiment-8th Cavalry.
    Disbanded near Morgantown on April 17.

Units 16th through 19th

  • 16th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry [also called 75th Regiment-7th Cavalry]
    Formed in July, 1864, by consolidating the five North Carolina companies of the 7th Confederate Cavalry Regiment, the three North Carolina companies of the 62nd Georgia Cavalry Regiment, and Company C of the 12th North Carolina Cavalry Battalion.
  • 17th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (2nd Organization)
    Organized at Camp Mangum, Raliegh, in May 1862, and was the successor to the disbanded 17th Regiment North Carolina Troops (1st Organization).It was mustered in to serve for three years or the duration of the war.
    It was disbanded at Center Church Randolph County, on 2 May 1865..
