The union of Leek comprises 19 parishes or places, and contains a population of 21,307. From: 'Leek - Leicestershire', A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848), pp. 55-62. The Union Workhouse was an large, brick building half a mile from Leek,built in 1838, with room for more than 250 people.
