The county is named after "Joseph Hardin legislator of the Southwest Territory and State of Franklin."^[3]

The Civil War Battle of Shiloh took placein Hardin County, a few miles southwest of Savannah,on the Tennessee River near an area called Pittsburg Landing. Shiloh Military Park occupies this site today.

Marriage

Marriages were not officially recorded in Hardin County during the first few years of its existence. In 1838, a law was passed mandating the practice.^[12] The following publication, based on early newspapers, helps to alleviate this genealogical obstacle:
