I need help in understanding the difference between the Patron question template and the {{unresolved}} template. As far as I can tell, they both have the same purpose. The resolved and unresolved templates were discussed by the community and created a long time ago. Are the missionaries watching and responding to the "unresolved" items in addition to the "patron question" issues? Thanks in advance for help in understanding the difference. --Fran 17:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry that it's taken me so long to respond, I somehow missed this comment before. Unresolved to me always meant something more than a simple question that needs an answer, something more like a long term discussion. However, I see your point that it could/should be used here too. What if we continue using the patron question template but added the {{unresolved}} template to that template? janellv 14:53, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- We could make patron question a redirect to {{unresolved}}, but I think the |patron question has been mostly added beneath the question not above it, which how the {{unresolved}} was designed to be used. Also using patron question would not allow quick and easy change from unresolved to resolved. An alternative is to use another pre-existing template {{helpme}}. This is meant for users to place on their own talk pages along with their question. It could be a research question or a contributor question. Or we could adapt patron question to something in between. As it stands it just marks the page and when you have it on a page like Talk:Ancestral File who can tell which questions have been answered and which have not. --Steve 17:18, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- Discussing it in a meeting this morning, the team sees a big difference between the {{unresolved}} template and the patron question template. They had the same understanding of {{unresolved}} as I did, that it seems to relate more to ongoing discussions that need input; patron question is an actual question that needs an answer and actually has an answer. We are struggling with the use of the {{helpme}} template in general. Patrons don't know to use it, and once they are experienced enough to use it, they often go to the forums instead. Perhaps we can find a way to combine the {{helpme}} and the tl|patron question templates so we are just using one rather than two. However, I do have a question on the helpme template - why keep the (changed) template on the page when the question has been answered? Why not just remove it? janellv 18:10, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
