Brief History
Quitman Light Artillery was organized in Quitman County, Mississippi, during May, 1862. In August it contained 59 officers and men and was assigned to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. Stationed at Port Hudson, the battery had only 40 members in June, 1863 and was captured in July. After the exchange it was not reorganized. Its captains were Richard T. English and William S. Lovell.[1]
Regiment Companies with the County of Origin
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
