The origins of the Hannover army goes back to 1617. However, a standing army only existed after the Thirty Years War. The army was involved in divers wars. A list of the involvment can be checked out at

The Brunswickers in North America 1776-1783

     In the War of Independence from 1775 to 1782/83 England reinforced its troups in North Amercia through armies rented in Germany, mainly of Hesse and Brunswick. After the peace treaties of 1782 the survivors of these armies were allowed the return home, however, many decided to settle in North America, and founded families.

      A list of casualties of the Brunswick army has been preserved and the Arthur Helmuth Rimpau listed those who deserted, served on the side of the enemy,were released from services, were POWs of known and unknown location and those who served in other functions. The list of these men with their places of origin and last known whereabouts was published in Archiv fùr Sippenforschung, Jahrgang 37, Heft 43 (1971).      There are names of  Brunswick Deserters in the War of Independence inArchiv für Familiengeschichtsforschung 1. Jahrgang, Heft 2 (1997) listed by the author Gerhard Friesen. Between 1776 and 1782 5700 men went to America from Brunswick of which only 2700 men returned home. The rest either died, deserted or received their releases while in America. On page 29 of above named periodical the list of  deserters start.
