Brief History

The 3rd Regiment, Indian Home Guard was organized at Tahlequah and Park Hill in July 1862 with Colonel William A. Phillips as commander. It was mostly composed of Cherokee Pins,^[1]

Wikipedia gave slightly different information. It stated that the 3rd Regiment, Indian Home Guard was organized at Carthage, Missouri, September 16, 1862.^[2]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
