Brief History
"The 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers ...was orgnized July 12, 1861, for twelve months, and reorganized July 12, 1862, for two years. Five companies that were temporarily attached to this regiment after the reorganization are reported to have been assigned, February 3, 1863, to the 2d Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers."[1]
The 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers was also known as:
- Watie's Regiment
- The 2nd Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles, Arkansas
- The 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles or Riflemen)[1]
"Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. contains no history for this unit.[2]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
