Several valuable cemetery indexes have been compiled for Maine.

The Maine State Archives has the Veterans Cemetery Records Collection, a card file of veterans from King Philip's War through World War I. It is first arranged by war then alphabetically by the veteran's name. The Family History Library has a film copy of this source. See:

Maine State Archives. Cemetery Index of Veterans. [N.p.]: Photographic Sciences Corp., [1975?]. (FHL films 1001841-51; computer number 175656.) This is an index to names of veterans buried in cemeteries in Maine. Records are arranged alphabetically by name of county, town, and cemetery.

The Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA) collects transcripts of tombstone records. The names on the tombstones found in over 3,800 cemeteries have been indexed by the association. The microfilms are available at the Maine State Library, the University of Maine at Orono, The Family History Library, and the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

There is a very large collection of Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA) records which also include some Bible and family records. Approximately 300,000 persons are listed from more than 3,800 cemeteries. The Family History Library has microfilmed four separate parts of these cemetery records, gathered primarily by the Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA). The first three sets were microfilmed at the Maine State Library:

•Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, Surname Index. Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1982 (on 210 FHL films beginning with 1314437; computer number 156647). These records were gathered by MOCA from 1972 to 1981 and list the individuals buried in the same plot.•Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, Surname Index, Series 2. Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1982 (on 17 FHL films beginning with 1316388 item 2; computer number 188611). These records were gathered by MOCA from 1970 to August 1982 and list the individuals buried in the same plot. •Faylene Hutton Cemetery Collection, Surname Index. Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1991 (on 91 FHL films beginning with 1753004; computer number 680118). These records were gathered by MOCA from September 1981 to 1991. There are a few cards from 1972. These records list the individuals who were buried in the same plot.•MOCA Cemetery Inscription Project (MIP): Series One. Bangor, Maine: Northeast Reprographics, 198-? (on 6 FHL films beginning with 1685832; computer number 510112). The records were copied from cemeteries from about 1969 to 1978. They are typed in book format and each page is numbered.

MOCA compiled an index to Revolutionary War veterans buried in Maine. This is also known as the Bicentennial Index Project (BIP). This computer printout lists information about more than 6,000 Revolutionary War veterans. See:

The index contains the soldier's name, date and place of birth, date and place, of death, date of marriage, and the name of the soldier's spouse. It is arranged alphabetically by the soldier's birthplace.

Maine Old Cemetery Association. MOCA Revolutionary War Soldier Burial Place. [N.p.], 1987. (On 15 FHL fiche 6333597; computer number 752309.) This index contains the soldier's name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, date of marriage, and the name of the spouse. It is arranged alphabetically by the name of the town where the soldier was buried.

Daughters of the American Revolution (Massachusetts). Grave Locations of Revolutionary Soldiers and Sailors of Maine and Massachusetts. Salt Lake City: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1991. (FHL films 1307668-9; computer number 641518.) This index contains the soldier's birth, death, and burial information. Some cards also list the soldier's spouse and place of marriage.
