Beginning in 1843, Indiana had an enumeration of children aged 5 to 21. Until 1853, the district was the Congressional Township and the enumeration was filed, ultimately, with the State Treasurer, who by statute was the State Superintendent of Schools. These enumerations are at the Indiana State Archives. From 1853 to 1932, the district was the Civil Township and initially children aged 7 to 17 were listed. Later this was expanded to children aged 6 to 21. Beginning in 1901, the enumeration listed each child’s name, month and year of birth. Surviving original enumerations can be found in courthouses, local historical societies, and the Indiana State Archives. The Family History Library has microfilmed some of them.
