6 million names and growing
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - A new international database with
over six million names on CD-ROM has been announced by The
Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints. The searchable
genealogy database, known as Pedigree Resource File, is
contained on 5 compact discs and is growing at the rate of 1.2
million names a month.
The Pedigree Resource File contains the personal family
records submitted to the popular FamilySearch® Internet
Genealogy Service www.familysearch.org.
PRF displays each contributor's information exactly as it is
submitted, with notes and sources that are invaluable for
family history researchers.
The database also has great international appeal, with over
forty percent of the records submitted from users outside the
U.S., Canada, and the British Isles. The discs allow users to
print custom reports and charts, and export GEDCOM files from
the database. David E. Rencher, Director of Library services
says, "that means those of us with ancestral ties outside
these [U.S., Canada, and British Isles] areas may find
increasing success in linking with our roots from their
place(s) of origin in the world."
The first set of five discs can be purchased for $15 at
Church distribution centers worldwide or ordered on the
Internet at www.familysearch.org. A free searchable master
index for all Pedigree Resource File submissions and discs
will be accessible on www.familysearch.org sometime in the
first quarter of 2000.
