Black History
Histories of Blacks or Black communities. (Histories of slaves or histories of
slavery are under "Slavery and Bondage.")
Black Records
Records and documents about Blacks. This topic includes African-American records,
African-Canadian records, instructions for researching Black records, etc. (Records of
slaves are under "Slavery and Bondage.")
Ethnic Groups
Histories and records of racial, ethnic, or other groups that comprise a segment of
the national population. This includes records of Hispanics in the United
States, Germans in North Dakota, Japanese in Brazil, Basques in Spain, etc. (Histories and records
of African-Americans and Blacks are under "Black History" or "Black
Records." Jewish histories and records are under "Jewish History" and
"Jewish Records.")
Ethnology
Studies and descriptions of races of peoples and their origins (including caste
systems). Ethnology includes traditions; where or how the race lived; physical,
social, and religious characteristics, etc.
Native Races
Histories, descriptions, or records of groups of people, tribes, etc. who were already
inhabiting an area when another group of people settled there. Often these native races did not have
written records. These include Native Americans, Australian Aborigines, Maoris, etc.
Slavery and Bondage
Records and information about slaves, indentured servants, serfs, etc. These records
include lists of people who were slaves or indentured servants, censuses of slaves, deeds
where people are listed as property, records of the freeing of slaves (manumissions),
etc.
Social Life and Customs
Information about the manners, customs, ceremonies, traditions, and lifestyles of a
region, country, etc.
Religious Groups
Buddhist History
Histories of the Buddhist religion or Buddhist groups.
Buddhist Records
Records and documents created by or about Buddhist groups.
Church Directories
Lists of the names and addresses of Christian religious groups or officials.
Directories may list where the officials have served or indicate where church records were
kept.
Church History
Histories of Christian religious groups. The histories may be general (history of a
denomination or a church worldwide) or specific (history of a certain building, a
Catholic parish, a Latter-day Saint ward, etc.).
Hindu History
Histories of the Hindu religion or Hindu groups.
Hindu Records
Records and documents created by or about Hindu groups.
Islamic History
Histories of the Islamic religion or Islamic groups.
Islamic Records
Records and documents created by or about Islamic groups.
Jewish History
Histories of the Jewish religion or Jewish communities.
Jewish Records
Records and documents created by or about Jewish groups.
Poorhouses, Poor Law, etc.
Records about the care and support of the poor, including lists of people in poorhouses,
removal and settlement papers, lists of people eligible to pay poor rates, and
laws providing for or regulating the care of the poor, etc. Poorhouses were also called
workhouses.
Religion and Religious Life
General works about beliefs, customs, and practices of religious groups (rituals, tenets,
etc.).
Shinto History
Histories of the Shinto religion or Shinto groups.
Shinto Records
Records and documents created by or about Shinto groups.
