their own topic: probate (wills, etc.); divorce; guardianship (adoptions);
orphans and orphanages; naturalization and citizenship; and land and property. Records
from church courts are assigned to "Church Records."
Law and Legislation
Records, histories, and descriptions of laws, codes, ordinances, etc.
Naturalization and Citizenship
Records, laws, and information concerning citizenship. These include the process and
requirements to become a citizen or subject (naturalization) and the records created from
that process. The records include oaths of allegiance and naturalization papers and may
give birth, marriage, and family information.
Notarial Records
Records of notaries, who (in many places) verified business transactions, wills, marriage
contracts, sales of land, etc.
Orphans or Orphanages
Records about children raised or cared for by someone other than their birth parents. The
records usually give the name and age of the child and may include descriptions of the
places the child lived. "Orphans and Orphanages" does not include adoption
records. Adoption records are assigned to "Guardianship."
Probate Records
Wills, settlements, court proceedings, laws, etc., that deal with a person's estate after
