 RECORD COLLECTIONS

Overview

The Family History Library has the largest collection of genealogical materials in the world. Most of the records are on microfilm; other formats include microfiche, books, maps, charts, CD-ROMs, and so on. Most of the records of the collection date from 1550 to 1920. Portions of the book collection are stored in high-density shelving and must be retrieved by library attendants (there is an attendants' window on each floor). Portions of the microfilm collection are not stored in the library. They are stored off site and must be ordered for viewing at the library (see Preparing to Visit the Library).

Resources

  • Over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm
  • More than 742,000 microfiche
  • Over 300,000 books, serials, and other formats
