Many family history periodicals publish local records of genealogical value. These may include genealogies; information about local records and archives; queries; census indexes; and transcripts of family Bibles, church records, court records, cemetery records, land records, obituaries, and wills.

Some major genealogical periodicals helpful for New York research are:

The Capital. 1986–. Published by Arthur C. M. Kelly, 60 Cedar Heights Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572. (FHL book 974.74 D25c; computer number 401142.) This periodical has material for Albany and Rensselaer counties. Indexed in Valley Quarterlies listed below.

De Halve Maen. 1922–. Published by the Holland Society of New York, 122 E. 58th Street, New York, NY 10022. (FHL book 974.7 B2ha vols. 19– present, with some incomplete issues; fiche 6050867–77 [vols. 28–63]; computer number 209502.) Articles relate to the Dutch colonial period.

There are two cumulative indexes to De Halve Maen: Louis Duermyer, ed., Index to Publications, 1885–January, 1977. (New York: The Holland Society of New York, 1977; FHL book 974.7 B22h; film 1036770 item 13; computer number 156127) and Roger D. Joslyn, comp., Index to “De Halve Maen”: Part 2, 1977–1988 (New York: The Holland Society of New York, 1991; not at FHL).

Dorot: The Journal of the Jewish Genealogical Society. 1979–. Published by the Jewish Genealogical Society of New York, P. O. Box 6398, New York, NY 10128. (FHL book 974.7 D25d; computer number 482831.)

Early Settlers of New York State: Their Ancestors and Descendants. Edited by Janet Wethy Foley. 9 vols. Akron, N.Y.: T.J. Foley, 1934–42. (FHL book 974.7 D25e; films 962286, 844674 and 844638 item 6; computer number 32747.) This is a valuable resource for central and western New York.

Lifelines. Official Journal of the Northern New York American-Canadian Genealogical Society. 1984–. Published by the Northern New York American-Canadian Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1256, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. (FHL book 974.7 D25L; computer number 314396.) This periodical is helpful for researching French-Canadian immigrants.

The Mohawk. 1984–. Published by Arthur C.M. Kelly, 60 Cedar Heights Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572. (FHL book 974.74 D25m; computer number 302976.) This periodical covers Montgomery and Schenectady counties. Indexed in Valley Quarterlies listed below.

The NYG&B Newsletter. 1990. Published by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, same as above. (FHL book 974.71 D25n; computer number 594880.) An every-name and subject index for volumes 1–6 was mailed with the fall 1996 issue.

New York State Queries Published by Carolyn Wilson Weinder. Spokane, Wash.: the author, 1987–. (FHL book 974.7 D25w; computer number 447862.) The address of the author is W. 2206 Borden Rd., Spokane, WA 99204-9668. There is a cumulative index to volumes 1–11.

The Patents: The Northeastern New York Genealogical Society Newsletter. 1982–. Published by the Northeastern New York Genealogical Society, 9 Lydia Street, S. Glens Fall, NY 12803. (FHL book 974.7 D25nn; computer number 309227.)

Tree Talks. 1961–. Published by the Central New York Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 104, Colvin Station, Syracuse, NY 13205-0104. (FHL book 974.7 B2t; computer number 65085.) Excludes New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. Some volumes in the Family History Library's collection are rearranged by counties, not date of publication. An index is Jean D. Worden, comp., Tree Talks Subject Index for Volumes 1–28 (1961–1988) . . . (San Dimas, Calif.: Jean D. Worden, 1988; not at FHL).

Valley Quarterlies: Upstate New York Directory and Every Name Index. Newsletters and Journals Series. [Novato, Calif.: Brøderbund Software], 1993. (FHL compact disc no. 9 pt. 160 [does not circulate to Family History Centers]; computer number 728627.) Index to 250,000 entries in the Kinship publications The Capital, The Columbia, The Mohawk, and The Saratoga from 1984–1993. These periodicals include information from Bible, cemetery, census, church, guardianship, Justice of the Peace, mid- wife, military, and naturalization records. The indexed names also appear in the FamilyFinder™ Index and Viewer described in the “Census” section of this outline.

Western New York Genealogical Society Journal. 1974–. Published by the Western New York Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 338, Hamburg, NY 14075-0338. (FHL book 974.7 B2w; computer number 191623.) Prints material pertaining to Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties.

Periodicals focusing on particular counties are available for Albany, Chautauqua, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Jefferson, Orange, Richmond, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Schenectady, Suffolk, Ulster, Westchester, Wyoming, and other counties.
