NEWSPAPERSLook this term up in the glossary.

Many Massachusetts newspapers have been published since the 1700s. Copies of these are at the American Antiquarian Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and other libraries.

A statewide index of newspaper items is:

American Antiquarian Society. Index of Marriages in Massachusetts Centinel and Columbian Centinel, 1784 to 1840. Boston: G.K. Hall and Co., 1961. (FHL book 974.4 V22i; computer number 91385.)

To locate additional indexes see:

A Guide to Newspaper Indexes in New England. New England Library Association Bibliography Committee, 1978. (FHL book 974 B32n; fiche 6051391; computer number 5148.)

The Boston Evening Transcript's genealogical column carried valuable information from 1895 to 1963. The Family History Library has:

Boston Evening Transcript Genealogical Columns, 1895, May 1900–April 1941. Salt Lake City: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1955. (FHL films 014735–44; computer number 105195.)

Boston Transcript Genealogy Newspaper Columns, June 6, 1896–April 30, 1941. [Middletown, Conn.: Godfrey Memorial Library, 197–?]. (FHL fiche 6011001–6011680; computer number 6998.)

For two helpful indexes to the columns, see:

  • The Godfrey Memorial Library, Middletown, Connecticut, has published an index in American Genealogical–Biographical Index, where most names can be found (see the “Genealogy” section of this outline).
  • The Boston Public Library has indexes for 1901– 1935:

Boston Public Library
