How to Start Your Family History

Resources in the Guide

Below are directions for accessing the resources mentioned in the guide.

Pedigree Chart—Download or print a form to list your pedigree: your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and so on.

  1. Click Search.
  2. Click Research Helps.
  3. Click Sorted by Document Type.
  4. Scroll down and click Pedigree Chart Form for a Web formatted version of this document, or click [PDF] for the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) version of this document, which is designed to be printed. To download the PDF document, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, available online at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.

Family Group Record—Download or print this form to list an entire family and their information.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Search.
  2. Click Research Helps.
  3. Click Sorted by Document Type.
  4. Scroll down and click Family Group Record Form for a Web formatted version of this document, or click [PDF] for the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) version of this document, which is designed to be printed. To download the PDF document, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, available online at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.

Personal Ancestral File—Download a Windows®-based program to help you organize your family history information.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Order/Download Products.
  2. Click Software Downloads - Free.
  3. Select a version of Personal Ancestral File (while the newer versions are more powerful, they require more space on your hard drive).

Search for Ancestors—Search for deceased individuals in the FamilySearch.org database.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Search.
  2. The Search page allows you to search all resources, or you can select a single resource to search from the menu on the left.

Family History Library Catalog, Surname Search—Search for published histories of individuals in the Family History Library collection.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Library.
  2. Click Family History Library Catalog.
  3. Click Surname Search.

Family History Centers—Locate a family history center near you.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Library.
  2. Click Family History Centers.

Web Sites—Locate other family history Web sites that may contain histories or information about your family.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Search.
  2. Click Web Sites.

Research Guidance—Search for records that may have information about your ancestors.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Search.
  2. Click Research Guidance.

Research Helps—Forms and other helps to download or print.
From FamilySearch.org:
  1. Click Search.
  2. Click Research Helps.
  3. Click Sorted by Document Type.
  4. Select a Document Type from the list (form, letter writing guide, map, reference document, research outline, resource guide, step-by-step guides, or word list).
